Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has resigned from his post.
He resigned on Saturday (August 10) noon.
Earlier, the Chief Justice talked to Law, Justice and Parliamentary affairs Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul about his decision to step down from his post.
Besides, five other judges of the Appellate Division have decided to resign from their posts, according to a source of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry.
A gazette notification will be issued once the legal procedure on the issue completes, the source said.
Earlier, the chief justice decided, in principle, to resign from his post while talking to the reporters.
His decision came following a protest today from students, who issued an ultimatum to him and judges of the Appellate Division to resign by 1:00pm.
Around 11 am on Saturday (August 10), Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, issued an ultimatum to Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and judges of the Appellate Division to resign by 1:00pm from the Supreme Court premises.
If the Chief Justice and other judges of the Appellate Division do not resign by 1:00pm, they will besiege their residences, Hasnat Abdullah said.
Earlier, around 10:30am, several hundred protesters, including students and lawyers, started gathering on the SC premises, demanding resignation of the chief justice and the judges of the Appellate Division.
