Garment workers’ protest in Kachukhet: Army, police vehicles set ablaze

Workers from a garment factory in Kachukhet area of Mirpur-14 in Dhaka are holding demonstrations by blocking roads on Thursday (October 31) morning to press home their various demands.

During the protest, the protesters vandalized and set fire to two vehicles belonging to police and the army. The incident took place around 10 am.

Traffic in the area was completely halted.

On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control.

However, no casualties were reported immediately.

Shah Mohammad Faisal, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhashantek police station, said: “We were on the spot to bring the situation under control. Suddenly, some workers threw bricks and stones at law enforcement officers.”

Eyewitnesses said that the workers of Diana Garments protested on the Kachukhet road with various demands. At one stage, they tried to block the road. When the police and army personnel tried to calm the agitating workers, the protesters started throwing bricks and stones at them. The police resorted to baton charge in self-defense.

Lima Khanom, duty officer of the Fire Service Control Room, said: “There was a report of an army vehicle and a police van being set ablaze in the Kachukhet area. Two firefighting units worked to douse the blaze set on the vehicles.”
