Toby Cadman, an international criminal law expert and special adviser to the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, has expressed hope that India will extradite ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
He expressed the hope while talking to reporters after a meeting with the tribunal’s chief prosecutor and investigation officials on Wednesday (December 11).
In reply to a question, he said, "India is a democratic state, as a democratic state, it should take steps in accordance with the treaty and following the law to send Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh.”
Should formal charges be framed under the tribunal’s laws and the request not be honoured, the Bangladesh government might consider proceeding in her absence, he said.
Toby Cadman, joint head of London-based Guernica 37 law firm, has been appointed as special advisor to Mohammad Tajul Islam, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh.
