40% Beximco workers not found: Commerce Adviser

Commerce Adviser SK Bashir Uddin has said that we were informed that there are 40,000 workers in different factories of Beximco Group, but in a preliminary investigation, about 40 percent were not found.
The Commerce Adviser made the remarks at a press conference held at the Secretariat on Thursday (January 23).
“We knew that the amount of loans taken against 32 factories at the Beximco Industrial Park was Tk 23,000 crore and we were trying to reopen the factories. But it is not possible now, as the group has default loan of Tk 50,000 crore”, he said.
Although the employees of the group are demanding for the reopening of the production units, but it cannot happen now, he said.
Some Tk 12,000 crore has been borrowed against the names of 16, out of 32 factories, at the Beximco Industrial Park which have no existence, according to the advisory council committee formed to review the labour and business situation of the companies at the industrial park.
Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Sakhawat Hossain, also convener of the committee, and Home Adviser Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) were present at the press conference.
