Agitating government primary school teachers left the Shahbagh area on Friday night, giving an ultimatum to the government.
Teachers’ leader Monibul Haq Basunia announced at around 7:45pm that their demand for upgrading to the 10th grade must be met by January 31.
Earlier, a 10-member delegation of the agitating primary school teachers reached the Chief Adviser’s state residence, Jamuna, to press home their demand.
They handed over a memorandum to the Chief Adviser’s representative.
Thousands of teachers gathered at Central Shaheed Minar on Friday under their programme ‘Long March to Dhaka’. Teachers from Dhaka and adjoining districts attended the gathering.
Assistant teachers of primary schools made the same demands to the government in their speeches.
They want their jobs to be upgraded to the tenth grade of the pay scale.
Nurul Haque Nur, President of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, joined the teachers in solidarity.
In his speech, Nur also called on the government to accept the demands of the primary teachers.
Their rally moved towards the Chief Adviser’s residence from Central Shaheed Minar but police stopped them at Shahbagh.
The teachers are currently employed under the 13th grade, which classifies them as blue collar workers and allows only Tk11,000 monthly salary. Under the 10th grade, they would get Tk16,000 per month, they claimed.
