KM Shafiullah, one of the sector commanders of the Liberation War, passed away on Sunday (January 26) morning at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the capital.
He was 90.
Shafiullah, also Maj Gen (retd) of the Bangladesh Army, breathed his last around 8 am at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital while undergoing treatment.
He had been suffering from various ailments, including diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver, thyroid complexities, and dementia for long.
Shafiullah was the commander of Sector 3 at the beginning of the Liberation War. Later, he was appointed as one of three brigade commanders, leading what was called the ‘S-force’ [after his surname].
He was awarded the title of ‘Bir Uttam’ for his notable contribution to the Liberation War.
Shafiullah served as the chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from 1972 to 1975. He also served as a Bangladeshi ambassador to different countries, including Malaysia, Canada, Sweden, and England.
