Charge framing: That Assistant Commissioner Urmi to move to HC

A Dhaka court has framed charges against suspended assistant commissioner Tapasi Tabassum Urmi in a defamation case.

Urmi’s lawyer said that they will move to the High Court against the charge framing.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah issued this order on Tuesday (February 4), dismissing the acquittal petition for her submitted by Urmi’s lawyer.

Urmi’s lawyer PM Mahadi Hasan said, “We are upset by the order framing the charges in this case. We will move to the High Court regarding this matter.”

The court on January 26 had set today for holding a hearing on the charge framing in the case.

Gono Adhikar Parishad higher council member Abu Hanif filed the case on October 8, 2024.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain after recording the statement of the complainant, summoned the accused on November 28. Urmi surrendered before the court on that day and pleaded for bail. The court after holding a hearing on her plea, allowed her bail on Tk 500 bond.

On October 8, Abu Hanif, a member of the higher council of Gono Adhikar Parishad, filed the case against Urmi with the court, stating she made ‘derogatory remarks’ about Abu Sayed, student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur and also a coordinator of the quota reform movement, who was killed in police firing during quota reform protests on July 16, and the interim government and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.

On October 5, Urmi wrote on Facebook that the interim government has no constitutional basis.

She was made OSD the next day and was suspended on October 7.
