Students of the Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) are staging a sit-in programme in the capital’s Shahbagh to press home their four-point demand.
The demonstration began at 11:30am on Sunday (February 9), with students blocking the road in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh under the banner of the General MATS Students’ Unity Council.
The students said they had paused their previous protests after the health ministry sought seven days to address their concerns. However, as no visible progress has been made, they have resumed their demonstration and vowed to continue until a draft policy is formulated.
Their four-point demands include recruitment to vacant positions in the 10th grade and the creation of employment opportunities, abolishing the Health Professionals Board and forming a new regulatory body named the Medical Education Board of Bangladesh, ensuring higher education opportunities in clinical subjects aligned with the MATS curriculum, and renaming Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) to Medical Institute.
