Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) is being rebuilt with a new name.
The adviser gave this information in response to a question from reporters after a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Committee at the Secretariat on Tuesday (February 18) afternoon.
The home adviser said, “There have been discussions on the reorganizing the force, including changing the name of RAB. The name may be finalized in the next meeting. What the name may be is still under discussion.”
RAB was formed in 2004 as an elite force to suppress top terrorists and notorious militants.
However, later, there were allegations that the organization was involved in seven murders in Narayanganj, forced disappearance cases and some other human rights violation cases.
The United States imposed sanctions on RAB during the Awami League government over these allegations.
According to the Commission of Inquiry on Disappearances formed by the interim government, RAB was involved in 172 out of the 400 disappearance cases.
