All types of civic services remain closed as Nagar Bhaban under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) was practically paralyzed for a week due to the movement of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain’s supporters demanding his swearing-in as the mayor of DSCC.
As a result, the city dwellers are facing sufferings.
Meanwhile, the High Court will announce today its judgment on the writ petition seeking suspension of the Election Commission’s gazette notification that declared BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
However, BNP leader Ishraque Hossain yesterday declared that he would not leave the area in front of the chief adviser’s residence, Jamuna, until the demands were fulfilled.
Regarding the disruption of civic services, DSCC Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia said, “It is not possible to carry out any activities of the city corporation as the Nagar Bhaban was kept locked. All civic services including birth and death registration, citizenship certificates, inheritance certificates, land transfer are closed.”
He said that not only the services of Nagar Bhaban, but also the eight regional offices outside Nagar Bhaban are closed.
Earlier on May 13, a writ petition was filed by Md Mamunur Rashid, a resident of DSCC area, with the High Court seeking its directive to prevent BNP leader Ishraque Hossain from taking oath as the mayor of DSCC.
The writ also sought action against the Judge of Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal for giving a fraudulent judgment by declaring Ishraque as mayor.
Earlier on March 27, Judge of Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal Md Nurul Islam cancelled the results of the 2020 DSCC election and announced BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as its mayor.
Later on April 27, the EC issued a gazette notification declaring him as mayor.
