BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has described the High Court decision on Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayoral election of Ishraque Hossain as a victory of the people.

He said, “I hope the government will take steps to arrange the oath taking ceremony.”

The BNP secretary general also requested leaders and activists of the party to free roads for the people’s comfort and not to block roads anymore.

Mirza Fakhrul, who is now in Bangkok for treatment, made these remarks while reacting to the High Court’s rejection of a writ petition on Thursday.

BNP media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan gave this information.

“The people have won in this decision. This is undoubtedly another victory for democracy. When the mayoral election was held, the fascist Awami League government forcibly snatched away the result,” Fakhrul said.

The HC summarily rejected a writ petition that challenged the Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal's verdict declaring BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as DSCC mayor.

The BNP secretary general said the people of the country, including Dhaka dwellers, declared Ishraque as the mayor by taking to the streets in favour of him.

He urged LGRD and Cooperatives Ministry to take immediate steps to swear in Ishraque Hossain without creating any more obstacle to ease the situation.

Fakhrul also reiterated the party’s longstanding demand of announcing the roadmap of the parliamentary elections quickly to overcome the political crisis.
