Shafik Rehman acquitted in Joy ‘abduction-murder attempt’ case

Senior journalist Shafik Rehman has been acquitted in a case over an alleged plot to abduct and murder Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Cour Judge Tariq Ezaz passed the order on Tuesday (May 27). Meanwhile, Shafik Rehman was in court.
The decision overturns the seven-year jail sentence he was handed in the case.
Earlier, the appeal hearing against Shafik Rehman's sentence concluded on April 27. Then the court set May 27 for delivering the verdict.
On August 17, 2023, the verdict in the case was announced. In the verdict, five people, including journalists Shafik Rehman and Mahmudur Rahman, were sentenced seven years in prison under two separate sections.
