The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Thursday (May 29) suspended the operation of all types of water transport across the country.
The measure was taken following inclement weather due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised hoist distant cautionary signal No 3, according to a Met office bulletin.
According to the statement, the low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression. As a result, inland and coastal waterways have become turbulent.
