Verdict in Maj Sinha murder case today

The High Court (HC) is set to deliver today (June 2) its verdict in a case filed in connection with the murder of Major (retired) Sinha Md Rashed Khan.
The HC bench of Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman and Justice Md Sagir Hossain will pronounce the verdict on the death references and appeals of the convicts in the case.
Major Sinha, who served in the Special Security Force (SSF), was shot dead by police at the Shamlapur check post in Teknaf on the night of July 31, 2020 as he was returning after shooting videos for his YouTube channel in the village of Marishbunia.
Later, on August 5 same year, Sinha’s elder sister filed a murder case accusing former officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das, sub-inspector Nandadulal and seven others with Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate Court in connection with the murder.
A Cox’s Bazar court on January 31 in 2022 in a verdict handed down death sentence to suspended police officials Pradeep Kumar Das and Liaqat Ali for killing Major (retired) Sinha Md Rashed Khan.
Pradeep, the then officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, had plotted to kill the retired army official, and Liaqat, who was the in-charge of Baharchhara Investigation Centre, executed the plan by shooting Sinha at an APBn check post on July 31, 2020, the court said.
Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammed Ismail also sentenced six others, including three policemen, to life term imprisonment in the case.
All the convicts were fined Tk 50,000 each.
Seven other police personnel, however, were acquitted as the charges against them could not be proven in court.
Police Sub-Inspector Nandadulal Rakshit, constables Sagar Deb and Rubel Sharma, and informants Nurul Amin, Nezam Uddin and Ayaz Uddin were sentenced to life-term imprisonment.
