Nepal begins power supply to Bangladesh

Nepal has started hydropower export to Bangladesh. This is the first time Nepal is supplying 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh using Indian transmission lines, opening a new horizon of regional energy cooperation between the two countries.

Power Grid Bangladesh (PGB) confirmed the matter on Sunday (15 June).

According to the PGB daily report, the electricity import started at 12 midnight on Saturday. The power is coming to Bangladesh at a rate of 38 megawatts per hour until 12 noon on Sunday.

The decision was taken during the visit of former Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal "Prachanda" to India from May 31 to June 3, 2023.

At that time, the three countries pledged to increase regional energy cooperation and strengthen economic ties. According to the decision, 40 megawatts of electricity from Nepal will be supplied to Bangladesh using the Indian grid.

According to the agreement signed between Nepal and Bangladesh, the price of this electricity has been set at $0.064 or 6.4 cents per unit.
