Rice prices rise

Retail rice prices in Dhaka have risen by Tk5 to Tk6 per kg due to an alleged supply shortage and transportation costs.

Traders claimed that the supply of rice in the retail market has decreased as mill owners in the northern part of the country have provided rice to the government. Besides, rice prices have gradually risen due to the stockpiling of paddy and rice by large corporate companies.

As a result, the low-income people are in trouble now.

Visiting different markets in the capital on Friday (June 27) it was found that a kg of miniket rice was selling for Tk 80-82 on the retail level. Before Eid, the same rice was sold for 75 to 76 taka. So, the price of miniket rice has increased by 5 to 6 taka.

BR-28 and BR-29 rice is now being sold at 60 to 62 taka, which was 58 to 60 taka before Eid. Accordingly, the price of these varieties of rice has increased by two taka. Nazirshail rice at Tk75-78 per kg, Kataribhog at Tk72-76, Chinigura rice at Tk120-150.
