Former CEC denied bail, sent to jail

A court in Dhaka has denied bail to former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal and ordered him to jail following a three-day police remand in a sedition and election fraud case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq passed the order after rejecting bail petition on Sunday noon (June 29).

PBI Inspector Syed Sajedur Rahman, the investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court and pleaded to keep him behind the bar.

Meanwhile, his lawyer Md. Shafiul Alam sought bail. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki opposed the plea.

Earlier on June 25, Kazi Habibul Awal was arrested from the Moghbazar area. Later, the next day, the court granted him a three-day remand.
