National Charter possible this month: Ali Riaz 

National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Ali Riaz has said that they will be able to prepare a ‘National Charter’ by this July.

A series of dialogues are underway with the aim of establishing a national consensus. 

He said this at the beginning of the seventh day of the second round of discussions at the Doel Hall of the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Wednesday (July 2). 

Representatives of various political parties including BNP, Jamaat and NCP participated in it.

Before the discussion began, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the martyrs killed in the July Uprising. 

Professor Riaz said, “There may not be any big achievements every day, but we are moving forward. Everyone has a party position, but we are optimistic in formal and informal communication. People expect something from us.” 

He also said, “The people of the country are optimistic about reforms. We do not want anyone to return to the old position. The question is that we will give priority on personal interest or country’s interest”.

The meeting discussed the caretaker government, the limits of the President’s pardon and other unresolved issues. 

The commission conducted 45 sessions in the first phase from March 20 to May 19. After that, the second phase of discussions began. The main goal is to finalize a consensus-based ‘National Charter’ by July.
