Tazia processions start from Hussaini Dalan

Wearing black clothes, members of the Shia community brought out Tazia processions in the capital amid tight security on the occasion of the holy Ashura.

The processions started from 400-year-old Hussaini Dalan Imambara in old Dhaka at 10 am on Sunday, marking the 10th day of Muharram. The processions will end at Dhanmandi lake via Lalbagh, Azimpur, New market, Science Lab area.

Since early Sunday, thousands of Muslims of Shia community from Dhaka and surrounding areas, have been gathering at the spot.

On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family members and 72 followers embraced the martyrdom in the hands of Yazid’s soldiers at the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet (SM).

Police said adequate security measures have been taken centering the traditional Tazia procession.

Sunday has been declared a public holiday in Bangladesh. To mark the occasion, Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and private channels will broadcast special programmes, while newspapers and online media will publish features highlighting the day’s importance.
