Economist Abul Barkat arrested

Professor Abul Barkat, economist and former chairman of Janata Bank, has been arrested in connection with a corruption case.
Detective Branch (DB) Joint Commissioner Nasirul Islam confirmed the matter on Thursday night (July 10).
It was learnt that the arrest was made over a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Earlier, the ACC brought the charges on February 25 this year, accusing Barkat and others of embezzling Tk 2.97 billion through loan fraud involving the garment company AnonTex while he was serving as chairman of Janata Bank.
