Green chillis now twice as pricey in capital

Heavy and persistent monsoon rains have caused flooding in several areas of the country. Cropland has been submerged. The prices of most vegetables, including green chilies, have increased due to disruptions in production and supply.

The price of green chilli has doubled in Dhaka markets over the past one week, leaving consumers feeling the heat.

A survey of retail markets in the capital’s new market, Rayerbazar, and other areas revealed green chilli selling for a staggering Tk250-300 per kg on Friday (July 11).

The prices of most vegetables have increased by Tk10 to Tk20 per kilogram.

The eggplant was selling at Tk80 to 110 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk80, carrot at Tk130, Tomato at 150, Chichinga or snake gourd at Tk50, cucumber at Tk70, Long bean at Tk100 per kg, Arum at Tk70, Teasel gourd at Tk80, pointed gourd at Tk60, lady's finger at Tk50.

The prices of fish found normal. Medium-sized farmed Rui fish are being sold for Tk280 to Tk320.
