Govt to provide rice at Tk15 per kg

55 lakh families across the country will receive 30kg of rice at Tk15 per kg under the government’s food-friendly program from August.

Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder revealed the information in a press briefing at the secretariat in the capital on Tuesday (July 15).

He said that the program will begin in August and will continue till the next six months. Its purpose is to ensure the country's food security and prepare in advance to deal with the impact of potential flood situations.

This is not just social responsibility, but part of an institutional food safety policy, he said.

To run the program smoothly, 400,000 metric tons of rice will be procured at the government level. In addition, initiatives are being taken to import 500,000 metric tons of rice from the private sector, he added.
