Hamiduzzaman Khan, an illustrious sculptor and artist, has passed away at the age of 79.

He breathed his last at 10:00 am on Sunday (July 20) while undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s United Hospital.

Hamiduzzaman’s wife and painter Ivy Zaman confirmed his death.

Hamiduzzaman was admitted to the hospital on July 15 and had been in intensive care for three days, she said. He had been battling dengue and pneumonia.

“The doctors have informed us that his heart and kidneys are in good condition. We are hopeful that once the pneumonia is under control, he will be moved from the ICU to a regular bed,” she had said at the time.

“We are in contact with his family. The time for bringing him to the faculty has not been finalised yet. Once the family informs us, we will notify everyone,” said Azharul Islam, dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University.

Hamiduzzaman has worked extensively with water colours, oil paints, acrylics, and sketches, alongside his work as a sculptor.

Born on Mar 16, 1946, at Sahashram village in Kishoreganj, he graduated with a degree in fine arts from the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts, now the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University, in 1967 and joined the institution as a teacher in 1970.

Most of his sculptures are inspired by the Liberation War.
