Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has claimed that former chief justice (CJ) ABM Khairul Haque was responsible for the country’s political crisis.
“I sincerely thank the government for taking actions against him, even after such a long overdue,” he told journalists at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office on Thursday.
Fakhrul said, “He is a great enemy of Bangladesh, who caused significant harm staying at a top position. With the responsibility of shaping the nation's destiny, he resorted to betraying the people and the state.”
Expressing hope for a proper investigation into all allegations against Khairul Haque and a fair trial, the veteran BNP leader said, “He should be exposed to exemplary punishment so that no one can dare to harm the country being in such a position in the future.”
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Khairul Haque, also the former Chairman of the Law Commission, Thursday morning.
He served as the Chief Justice from October 1, 2010, to May 17, 2011. The Appellate Division bench, led by him, delivered a verdict on May 10, 2011, nullifying the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, rendering the caretaker government system illegal.
