Staff Correspondent, DHAKA, Mar 25: Nine eminent personalities and one organization-Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI)-have got Swadhinata Padak (independence award)-2014 for their special contributions to different fields.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the prestigious award to the persons and their representatives at a function held at Osmani Smriti Milonayoton in the city on Tuesday.
The nine awardees are artist Qaiyum Chowdhury, M Abul Khayer (posthumous), Shaheed Munsi Kabir Uddin Ahmed (posthumous), Shaheed Kazi Azizul Islam (posthumous), Lt Col (retd) Abu Osman Chowdhury, Dr Khosruzzaman Chowdhury (posthumous), Shaheed SBM Mizanur Rahman (posthumous), Dr. Mohammad Haris Ali (posthumous) and Principal Md Kamruzzaman (posthumous).
They were selected for the award in recognition of their glorious and outstanding contributions to the country`s education, culture and Liberation War.
BARI was chosen for the award for its outstanding contribution to the development of agriculture.
Swadhinata Padak is the highest state award given by the government. The award carries a gold medal, cash and a citation.
