Staff Correspondent: A Narayanganj Court on Monday placed ex-Rab member SM Masud Rana on a 5-day fresh remand in connection with the sensational seven murder case.


Senior Judicial Magistrate KM Mahiuddin passed the remand order when Detective Branch of Police Inspector Mamunur Rashid Mondal, also investigation officer of the case, produced him before his court seeking a seven-day remand.


After hearing, the court put Rana on five days’ remand.


Police arrested Lt Commander Rana, former commander of Special Crime Prevention Company of Rab-11, from Dhaka Cantonment area on May 18 in connection with the much-talked-about seven murders including Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam.


He was placed on a seven-day remand on the day. Later, he was remanded for eight days on May 25.


Two other accused Rab officials Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, ex-commanding officer of Rab-11, and Maj Arif Hossain were also arrested a day before.


The trio were shown arrested in the case filed for abduction and murder of seven people. Tareque Sayeed and Arif Hossain are now on third-phase five-day remand.


On April 27, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area in Narayanganj city. Hours into their abduction, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court, Chandan Kumar Sarker, and his driver were abducted while they were going to capital Dhaka.
 
Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya River on April 30. Besides, the body of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya on May 1.
 
Following the seven murders, Shahidul Islam alias Shahid chairman, father-in-law of slain Nazrul Islam, alleged that some Rab men killed Nazrul in exchange for Tk 6 crore from city councillor Nur Hossain and other suspects.
