New IGP to form ‘public-friendly police’

Staff Correspondent: The newly appointed Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque on Wednesday affirmed that country’s police force will be made a people-friendly one.
Shahidul Hoque came up with the assertion at a press conference at police headquarters in the capital after taking oath as the new IGP, this afternoon.
“I will emphasis on four factors-public safety, public laws and order, public interests and public health,” said the IGP.
Earlier on Tuesday government appointed Additional Inspector General of Police (Admin) AKM Shahidul Hoque as IGP while Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Benazir Ahmed as chief of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
A K M Shahidul Hoque BPM PPM hailed from Shariatpur district. He obtained his Masters in Social Welfare from the University of Dhaka. He also did LLB under DU and obtained MBA from a private university. He joined Police Service in 1986 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
In his distinguish career Hoque held many important commanding positions, which include Police Commissioner, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, DIG Chittagong Range, DIG Rajshahi Range, DIG (Finance and Development), Police Headquarters, SP Sirajganj, Chittagong, Moulvibazar and Chandpur.
Before promoted to IGP he was Additional IGP (Administration and Operations) at the status of Secretary of Bangladesh Police.
He was awarded Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) and also Presidential Police Medal (PPM) for his extraordinary and exemplary performance.
Hoque has served in three UN Peace Keeping Mission- Cambodia, Angola and Sudan while he was also awarded UN Peace Medal for his outstanding performance.
He took pragmatic initiative with new dimensions to make Community Policing philosophy as an effective tool of crime prevention in all his jurisdictions he served.
He is playing a pioneer role for implementing Community Policing in all over the country.
He is the author of different books like- 1. Police and Community with Concept of Community Policing, 2. Community Policing Ki abong Keno, 3. Bangladesh Police Surgrontho 4. Community Policing Concept, Aims and Objectives and 5. Bangladesh Police Hand Book etc.
