Sayeed Khokon celebrates the victory

Staff Correspondent: Awami League-backed Sayeed Khokon has been elected mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in a landslide victory in Tuesday’s polls.

According to the Election Commission (EC), Khokon, who ran with ‘hilsa’ symbol, got 535,296 votes in 886 polling centres.

His nearest rival, BNP-backed candidate Mirza Abbas, with the ‘mug’ symbol, managed 285,562 votes.

The vote counting of Dhaka South City Corporation was started at Mohanagar Nattaya Mancha around 7:30pm yesterday.

Dhaka South`s Returning Officer Mihir Sarwar Morshed made the voting result announcement from his office established at the Dhaka Mahanagar Natya Mancha.

Abbas pulled out of the race alleging large-scale rigging by ruling party supporters and other irregularities.

The chief election commissioner, however, said voting was peaceful leaving aside some ‘isolated incidents’ and urged all to accept ‘whatever the results’.

The election to the Dhaka South City Corporation, which has 18,70,753 voters, took place on Tuesday along with Dhaka North and Chittagong city corporations.
