Risingbd Desk: Today is the 69th birthday of Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.

On this day in 1947, Sheikh Hasina, also the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was born in Tungipara of Gopalganj in Faridpur.

Awami League and its associate organisations have drawn up elaborate programmes to mark the day.

However, she is now in New York to attend the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.

The prime minister spent much of her childhood in the small rural hamlet where she was born. She started her schooling there. In 1954 when Bangabandhu was elected a legislator, the family relocated to Dhaka.

Sheikh Hasina studied in Sher-e-Bangla Girls’ School and College and than in Azimpur Girls’ High School from where she passed her Matriculation in 1965. After school, she was studied in Badrunnessa Government Girls’ College.

During her Bachelor’s course, she was elected vice-president of the students’ union of Eden Girls’ College. (Badrunnessa and Eden Girls’ College was one college in those days.) Later, she enrolled in the Bengali department of Dhaka University for her Masters’ degree.

She has led the Bangladesh Awami League since 1981. Her political career has spanned more than four decades.

As an opposition leader, she was the target of an assassination attempt in 2004.

In 2007, the Awami League president was arrested for allegation on corruption and charged with murder by the then military-backed caretaker government.

She returned to power as the prime minister after the Awami League-led alliance won a landslide victory in December in 2008.

Sheikh Hasina became the prime minister for the third time on January 5, 2014.
