Judges to be signed within 6 months: SC

Staff Correspondent: The Supreme Court (SC) directed Judges of the High Court and appellate division of SC to sign in cases within six months after announcing verdict.

Move was come up in the full verdict on former Justice Syed Shahidur Rahman dismissal case issue.

The appellate division of Supreme Court yesterday published 103 page verdict giving 40 directions.

Earlier, on September 16, last year, A four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kuman Sinha upheld the removal of High Court additional judge Syed Shahidur Rahman.

On February 2, 2005, the High Court declared Shahid’s removal illegal. Shahid challenged his removal order notified in an official gazette by the law ministry on April 20, 2004 on orders from  the president.

He argued that he was removed illegally although the Supreme Judicial Council, led  by the then Chief Justice, in its report to the President in January 2004 said that the allegation that he had taken Tk 50,000 from a lobbyist before a bail hearing was not ‘proved beyond doubts.’

The Supreme Judicial Council report, however, said that he should not continue as an additional judge, said Shahidur.

On April 25, 2005, the Appellate Division stayed the High Court verdict after hearing a provisional appeal filed by Supreme Court lawyer Idrisur Rahman on behalf of Ain-o-Salish Kendra and Bangladesh Legal Aid Services Trust.
