Mahbubul Hoque Shakil no more

Staff Correspondent: Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil is no more. He died around 12.30pm on Tuesday Samdado Japanese Cuisine at Gulshan in the city.

Police held five persons of the restaurant for interrogation.

Prime Minister’s Assistant Press Secretary Asif Kabir told media that he died of cardiac arrest.


Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gulshan Thana Sirajul Islam said Samdado is a Japanese restaurant located at house-27, road-35, Gulshan 2. His body was recovered from a room in the hospital. Later, police sent the body to United Hospital.

Five employees of the restaurant were also recovered for interrogation, the OC added.


Central Awami League leaders rushed to the restaurant after receiving the news of his death. Shakil’s body will be kept at BIRDEM hospital’s morgue and an autopsy will be conducted before a namaz-e-janaza to be held at Dhaka University at 11.00 am Wednesday, the leaders said.

Prior to the post of Special Assistant to Prime Minister, Mahbubul Hoque Shakil served as deputy press secretary to Prime Minister.


Born in Mymensingh in 1968, Shakil’s father is a lawyer and former district administrator and district Awami League president and mother is a teacher.

Shakil completed his masters from sociology department at Dhaka University.

He was a former vice president and organising secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
