Actor Kalyan denied bail

Staff Correspondent: A court in Dhaka has rejected the bail petition of actor Kalyan Corraya who was arrested in a case filed over a road accident that injured chief photojournalist of Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

 

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abdullah Al Masud rejected the bail petition after hearing in the case on Sunday.

 

Defence counsel Faruk Mia filed the bail petition.

 

Petitioner’s lawyers Prosanta Kumar Karmakar, MA Jalil and Shuvro Roy Roni opposed the bail petition in the court.

 

The court on January 11 ordered the investigation officer to interrogate actor Kalyan Corraya at jail gate rejecting remand petition in a case filed over a road accident that injured chief photojournalist of Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

 

Earlier, Kalabagan police sought three-day remand for Kalyan a day after they arrested him in connection with the case filed with Kalabagan Police Station.

 

Omar Faruk, a sub-inspector of the police station and investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the petition.

 

Maj (retd) Sazzadul Kabir, security manager of Prothom Alo, on January 10 lodged the case against Kalyan.

 

Photojournalist Zia Islam was injured when a speedy private car hit his motorcycle from behind in front of Bashundhara City shopping complex in Dhaka’s Panthapath area around 11:30pm on January 9.

 

Zia was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and was later shifted to Apollo Hospital.
