March 25 as Gonohatya Dibas: JS discussion Mar 11

Parliament Correspondent: Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said a discussion will be held on March 11 over a proposal, raised by the ruling party parliament members, for observing March 25 as the Gonohatya Dibas (Day of Genocide) commemorating the brutality carried out by Pakistani Army on the people of Bangladesh on the black night of March 25, 1971.

The Speaker told the Parliament on Thursday.

The Speaker said discussion on the speech of the President will be concluded on March 9 and the sitting of the Parliament will continue till March 11.

With Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed in an unscheduled discussion in the parliament on February 15 demanded March 25 observe as the Gonohatya Dibas (Day of Genocide) commemorating the brutality carried out by Pakistani Army on the people of Bangladesh on the black night of March 25, 1971.

Later, leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina supported the proposal tabled by Tofail Ahmed.

On the day, Tofail Ahmed said Pakistani author Zunaid Ahmed published a book titled “Creation of Bangladesh: Myths Exploded” under the supervision of the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) distorting the history of Bangladesh's War of Liberation.

Following the issue, the ruling party parliament members demanded to observe March 25 as the Gonohatya Dibas (Day of Genocide).

Concluding the debate on the day, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said a notice, already submitted by a lawmaker in this regard, would be discussed to adopt a resolution declaring March 25 as the Gonohayta Dibas.
