DHAKA, July 15: The ruling Awami League (AL) expressed satisfaction at the 90-year jail sentence against former Jamaat Ameer Ghulam Azam for crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War in 1971.

At a press conference at Sheikh Hasina’s Political Office at Dhanmondi on Monday afternoon, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said, “We are pleased with the verdict.”

“The whole nation had been looking forward to a death sentence. But Ghulam Azam was handed 90 years behind the bars in view of his old age and frail health,” he added.

Meanwhile, Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed and Advocate Md. Qamrul Islam, State Minister, Ministry of Law, Justice. & Parliamentary Affairs also expressed their satisfaction over the verdict.

“The verdict has reflected the aspirations of the nation. We all have to show respect the judgment.” Barrister Shafique said.

The minister also said, “The tribunal has passed the verdict by cross examining a long and sinuous path of legal procedure.”

The tribunal also provided proper opportunity to Ghulam Azam fro self-defence, he added.

Barrister Shafique said, “Though all the claims were proved and he should have been sentenced to death but following the international principles, the tribunal awarded 90 years of jail.”

Earlier, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Monday noon sentenced former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Ghulam Azam 90 years in jail for his war crimes during the Liberation War in 1971.
