One killed in Brahmanbaria ‘gunfight’

Brahmanbaria Correspondent: A man was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in the district on Wednesday midnight.

The gunfight took place in Kuti Choumohoni area under Kasba Upazila.

The deceased is identified as Tajul Islam Al Mahmud alias Mama Hujur at Sadullahpur village under Nabinagar upazila in Habiganj district.

Police suspected that Tajul had a link with the murder of a local kabiraj (herbal medicine practitioner).

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kasba police station Mohiuddin Ahmed said: “Acting on a tip-off, a team of police raided Kuti Choumohoni area where Tajul along with his associates was preparing to commit subversive activities. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals hurled crude bombs and opened fire on police, prompting them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.”

“At one stage of the gunfight, police found the bullet-hit body of Tajul while the others managed to flee the scene,” added the OC.

Police recovered 35 cocktails, a pipe gun and some native weapons from the spot.

Five policemen received injuries during the gunfight.
