Rakib murder: HC commutes death of 2 convicts

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has given life-term imprisonment for two people who were handed down death sentences by a trial court for the brutal murder of teenager Rakib in Khulna in 2015.

The bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Jahangir Hossain commuted the sentences to life imprisonment Tuesday.

The court also fined the convicts -- Omar Sharif and Mintu -- Tk 50,000 for killing the boy and set two-year additional imprisonment term for fine default.

Rakib died after his former employers inserted a high-pressure air pump nozzle into his rectum at motor workshop.

The Aug 3, 2015, incident shocked the whole nation and calls to bring the perpetrators to justice reverberated across the country.In November the same year, a Khulna court convicted two persons, including the motor workshop owner, and awarded the death penalty.
