No bar on Sylhet mayor to discharge duties: SC

Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Huq Chowdhury takes his office

Staff Correspondent: The Chamber court of the Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Huq Chowdhury to discharge his duties.

Chamber Judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain dropped from its hearing list a petition filed by the government on Wednesday seeking stay on the High Court order that halted his suspension order.

The lawyers said that after the court order, there is no bar on Sylhet mayor Ariful Huq to discharge his duties.

Barrister Abdul Halim Kafi moved for Ariful Huq Chowdhury while Additional Attorney General Momtaz Uddin Fakir stood for the state.

Earlier, on April 2, Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury was suspended following his indictment in a case on 22 March.

Later, on April 5, the High Court order that stayed the suspension of Ariful will remain in force until further order from the Supreme Court.
