Staff Correspondent: Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha said, "The Supreme Court (SC) will not retreat from scrapping any law or ruling if they are contradictory to the principles of the constitution in future."

The chief justice came up with the comments while addressing as the chief guest at a function organised by the Department of Law Management at the auditorium of Jagannath University (JnU) in the capital on Sunday.

Sinha said, "The constitution, framed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has given authority to the Supreme Court to make judicial review of any law and under the constitution the SC has scrapped 5th, 7th, 8th, and 13th amendments to the constitution as they were contrary to the charter."

The two-third members of the parliament can amend the constitution and if it is contrary to the constitution, the SC can declare it illegal and void, the chief justice said.

Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman, vice-chancellor (VC) of the university, spoke at the function with the Chairman of Department of Law Management of the university Christine Richards in the chair.
