SC to deliver verdict on 138 BSMMU doctors May 21

Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) will deliver verdict on the appeals of 138 doctors challenging the illegality of their appointment to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on May 21.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, set the date on Wednesday after concluding hearing of five appeal pleas.

Senior lawyer Dr Kamal Hossain, Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud, lawyer advocate Kamrul Haque Siddiqui and lawyer AM Amin Uddin and lawyer Sharif Bhuiyan stood for the petitioners while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved for the BSMMU in the court.

In 2010, the High Court (HC) had ruled that the appointment process of these doctors was illegal because of some irregularities.

Later, on September 4 last year, the SC allowed the doctors to move an appeal petition against the verdict of the High Court. The hearing was concluded today.

The verdict will decide whether the doctors can get their jobs or not.
