Int'l Day for UN Peacekeepers today

Desk Report: The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is being observed today (Monday) in Bangladesh along with other countries across the world in a befitting manner.

The International Day for UN Peacekeepers is being observed on May 29 every year across the world.

The purpose of observing the Day is to underscore the importance of maintaining global peace, pay tribute to those who are involved in the peacekeeping missions and honour the UN peacekeepers who lost their lives for peace.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion of the day and greeted all including the members of the armed forces and police working in the US peacekeeping mission.

They also solemnly prayed for the salvation of the departed souls of those heroic peacekeepers who made supreme sacrifices for the cause of peace.

Different programmes have been taken in observance of the day, a spokesperson of Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) said on Sunday.

At the afternoon, a reception will be organized at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in honour of the close relatives of the deceased and injured Bangladeshi peacekeepers.

President Abdul Hamid is expected to attend the function as the chief guest. The BTV and BTB World will air the programme live.

A special presentation on different activities of Bangladesh in the UN peacekeeping mission will be made at the BICC in the afternoon.

In observance of the day, different mainstream national dailies have published special supplements and journals highlighting the importance of the day. Besides, different private television channels including Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar (BB) are airing special talk-shows on the occasion.

Since the first UN peacekeeping mission was established in 1948, more than 3,220 military, police and civilian personnel have lost their lives in the service of peace as a result of acts of violence, accidents and disease. UN Peacekeeping operations use the Day to strengthen bonds with the local populations that they have been deployed to serve.
