Staff Correspondent: The Supreme Court (SC) has upheld its order that stayed a High Court (HC) order for four months for granting bail to Amanur Rahman Rana, expelled Awami League (AL) lawmaker of Tangail-3 constitution, in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.

The Appellate Division bench of SC headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Thursday, rejecting the petition filed by MP Rana seeking amendment of the Appellate Division order.

Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud moved for MP Rana while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state in the court.

Earlier on May 8, the Appellate Division stayed the HC order four months and asked the court to dispose the case within six months.

On April 13, HC bench of Justice Md Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah granted anticipatory bail to MP Rana.

Alongside, the court also issued a rule asking the authority concern as to why permanent bail should not be granted to him.

Later, the state filed a petition to the Appellate Division against the order.

Faruk Ahmed, member of Tangail District Awami League, was shot to death on January 18, 2013.

Rana was sent to jail after he surrendered before the court in the case on September 18, 2016. He is currently confined in Kashimpur Central Jail.
