Pirojpur Bailey bridge collapse halts traffic links

Pirojpur Correspondent: Traffic on 11 roads of Pirojpur has come to a grinding halt after a bailey bridge collapsed in Bhandaria upazila of the district early Saturday.

The bridge collapsed after apparently failing to support the weight of two cargo-laden vehicles around 3:00am. Meanwhile, the drivers and helpers of the stone laden two trucks fled the scene leaving their vehicles.



Following the damage to the bridge, people of Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur and Pathargatha upazila of Barguna now cannot access roads that led to Dhaka, Barisal, Chittagong and Khulna.

Pirojpur Roads and Highway Division Sub Assistant Engineer Fakhrul Islam said that the Bailey bridge was risky. The pressure of over laden trucks was the main reason behind the collapse. Step was taken to bring crane from Barisal to recover the collapsed trucks.
