Sukanta Bhattacharya's 92nd birth anniv Tuesday

Gopalganj Correspondent: Today is the 92nd birth anniversary of poet Sukanta Bhattacharya.

He was born in 1926 in Kalighat, Kolkata. His ancestral home is at the village Unshiya, under Gopalganj district now, in Bangladesh. His father, Nibaran Bhattacharya, was in the book selling business in Kolkata.

An auditorium was built by government finance at his paternal home Kotalipara in Gopalganj. Everyday visitors from across the country visited the spot to know his biography and creations.

The poet Sukanta Bhattacharya lived for a mere 21 years but he enriched Bangla literature with his timeless creations.

During his lifetime, his poems were not widely circulated, but after his death his reputation grew to the extent that he became one of the most popular Bengali poets of the 20th century.

He is credited with six books—Chharpotro (1948), Ghum Nei (1950), Purbabhas (1950) Abhijan (1953), Mithe-Kadha (1951) and Giti Guccha (1965).

His poems Atharo Bocchor Boyosh, Agami, Chharpotro, Ghum Bhangar Gaan, Krishoker Gaan, and many others are considered as classics of Bangla literature and are still very popular among poetry lovers of the country.
He died of tuberculosis at the Jadavpur T. B. Hospital in 1947.

Kabi Sukanta Seba Sangha president Advocate Sardar Delwar Hossain said that some special programmes will be observed on the birth anniversary of the poet.
