Second submarine cable to be launched on Sunday

Staff Correspondent: The long-awaited second submarine cable will be launched on Sunday (September 10).

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the second undersea cable through a video conference at her official residence Ganabhaban around 10:00am.

Md Monwar Hossain, managing director of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) said that all types of preparation have been taken to inaugurate the cable.

Monwar Hossain said that from the cable we will get an initial bandwidth of 200 Gigabits per second (Gbps), which will rise to 1,500 Gbps in phases.

He also said, “The SEA-ME-WE-5 consortium is giving us 1500Gbps of bandwidth. First we need to assess what our demand is like and how much we need. If there is no demand, what do we do with this bandwitdth?”

SEA-ME-WE-5 stands for Southeast Asia, Middle East, Western Europe 5. Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, Srilanka, Pakistan, Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, France and Djibouti are a part of this consortium.
