Govt to give ID cards to Rohingyas: Home Minister

Senior Correspondent: Bangladesh government has decided to provide identity (ID) cards after registering Rohingya people who have fled to this country from Myanmar.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal briefed reporters after a meeting in the home ministry's conference room on Sunday.

While briefing reporters, Kamal said, "The Rohingya people who have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar will be given identity cards after their registration. None of them will get local and international aid without these identity cards."

The government will also allocate over a 2,000 acre land for Rohingyas as part of their rehabilitation at Kutupalang area under Ukhia upazila in Cox’s Bazar, the minister added.

Nearly 300,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh after the Myanmar military launched a counter-offensive following attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgents on 30 police posts and an army base on August 25.
