MP Sawkat ordered to pay back Tk 5cr to keep bail continue

Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has directed Shawkat Chowdhury, Jatiya Party lawmaker from Nilphamari-4, to pay Tk 5 crore to Bangladesh Commerce Bank Ltd (BCBL) within two months to keep bail continue.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by acting Chief Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah passed the order on Monday.

If the lawmaker does not pay the amount within two months after receiving the order, his bail in connection with two loan scam cases involving Tk 94 crore will be cancelled, according to the court order.

Earlier on 22 October, the High Court directed MP Sawkat to pay Tk 250 million to BCBL within 50 days in connection with the cases.

On 8 and 10 May, 2016, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed two cases against Sawkat Chowdhury and seven others.
