Teachers on hunger strike reject Nahid's assurance

Staff Correspondent: Saying that a process is underway to include new teachers to Monthly Pay Order (MPO) list, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid urged the teachers belonging to non-MPO educational institutions to break their hunger strike.

But the teachers did not break the hunger strike even after getting assurance from the education minister.

Hunger-striking teachers said they will continue the strike until their demand is met.

The minister arrived at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital around 11:00 am on Tuesday and attempted to break their strike.

Nahid informed that the matter depends on the finance minister and fund.

“But it will take time as we have to go through the procedures,” said the minister.

The teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions began fast-unto-death from Sunday morning demanding their institutions be included on the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) list.

Earlier, they went on movement under the banner of ‘non-MPO educational institution teacher-employee federation’ in front of Jatiya Press Club on December 26. Hundreds of teachers and employees from across the country took part in the strike.
