HC asks mayor Sakku to surrender

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has directed Comilla City Corporation(CCC) Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku to surrender before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka in connection with a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The court issued a rule to explain why the lower court order exempting Sakku of the corruption case should not be scrapped.

The HC, however, ordered the CMM court to grant bail to Sakku after his surrender.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim passed the order on Thursday.

The HC bench came up with the order and rule following a petition filed by the ACC challenging the legality of the lower court order.

A Dhaka court exempted Sakku from the corruption case.

On January 7, 2008, the ACC filed the case against the CCC mayor and his wife on charge of their involvement in amassing money through illegal means and concealing information.
