Writ for mandatory observance of 8 nat'l days rejected

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has rejected the writ petition seeking an order for making mandatory observance of eight National Days.

The HC bench of Justice Kazi Reza-ul Haque and Justice Mohammad Ullah on Monday passed the order, saying "We cannot make it mandatory for people. It is the responsibility of the people's elected parliament.

Lawyer M Mozammel Haque moved for the petition while Deputy Attorney General Tapos Kumar Biswas represented the state in the court.

Earlier on Wednesday, the petition was filed seeking mandatory observance of eight national days including Independence Day and Martyrs Intellectuals Day, for all political parties and citizens.

The petition also sought the HC directives postponing the next general election until the writ petition is disposed of.

In the petition, the HC directives were also sought for cancellation of the registration of political parties who will not observe the National Days.

The eight national days includes March 26 as Independence Day, December 14 as Martyrs Intellectuals Day, January 10 as Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day, August 15 as National Mourning Day, November 3 as Jail Killing Day.
