Ershad to propose Hamid as presidential candidate

Senior Reporter: Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad will formally propose name of current President Abdul Hamid as the next presidential candidate.
HM Ershad disclosed the decision after a presidium meeting held at the party’s central office at Banani in the city on Monday.
Presidium member Prof. Delwar Hossain said Jatiya Party (JP) has decided to support the ruling Awami league nominated candidate and current President Abdul Hamid for the presidential election.
Meanwhile, on behalf of President Abdul Hamid, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has submitted the nomination paper for the presidential election.
The minister submitted the nomination paper to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda at the Election Commission Secretariat at Agargaon in the city on Monday noon.
The presidential election will be held on February 18.
The date of submission of nomination was February 5 (from 10:00am to 4:00pm), while scrutiny of the nomination will be held on February 7 and the last date of withdrawal of nomination is February 10.
Abdul Hamid was sworn in as the president of Bangladesh on April 24, 2013. His tenure will expire on April 23, this year.
According to article 123 of the Constitution, the presidential election should be held between 90 and 60 days before expiry of the president’s five-year term.
